SEAMLESS at XPONENTIAL Europe 2026: legal perspectives on automated ships

SEAMLESS will be represented at XPONENTIAL Europe 2026, taking place in Düsseldorf next month. We are pleased to announce that Iolande Viricel (IDIT) has been selected as a speaker at this major European event dedicated to autonomous and uncrewed systems.
On 25 March 2026, she will deliver a presentation entitled:
“The Automated Ship – A Ship Like Any Other?”
Her talk will explore the legal and insurance implications of automated ships, with a particular focus on the legal qualification of the vessel. The presentation will assess whether existing regulatory frameworks are capable of accommodating these emerging technologies, especially in a cross-border context where differing national and international rules may apply.
This contribution reflects SEAMLESS’ commitment to addressing not only the technical development of automated inland waterway transport, but also the regulatory and legal challenges that must be tackled to enable safe, scalable, and harmonised deployment across Europe.
