The project

SEAMLESS is demonstrating how automation, remote operation and digitalisation can support a more efficient and competitive European waterborne freight transport system.

Over the course of the project, SEAMLESS has developed and integrated technologies addressing autonomous and remotely supervised vessel operation, Remote Operation Centres (ROCs), automated port operations, and digital tools supporting multimodal logistics.

These solutions are being validated through real-world demonstration activities in Northern and Central Europe. The first demonstration campaign in Norway brought together autonomous and conventional vessels, remote operation concepts and supporting digital technologies in an operational maritime environment. The project’s second demonstration campaign focuses on inland waterway transport in Central Europe, integrating vessel, shore-side and digital solutions across representative logistics operations.

Rather than viewing autonomous vessels as standalone systems, SEAMLESS addresses the complete transport chain: vessels, human supervision, ports, cargo handling and multimodal logistics. The project’s demonstrations provide evidence on the technical, operational and organisational conditions required for the future deployment of automated and autonomous waterborne transport in Europe.
