The IAME Annual Conference is a leading international forum for maritime economists, industry experts, and policymakers to explore the latest research and developments in maritime, port, and transport logistics.

The 2025 edition is being held from June 25 to 27 in Bergen, Norway, and this year it featured the SEAMLESS project as part of its scientific programme.

Professor Harilaos N. Psaraftis, from NTUA delivered a presentation based on the paper:

“Key Performance Indicators for an Autonomous Short Sea Shipping and Inland Waterway Transport System in Europe: The SEAMLESS Project”

Co-authored by Vasileios Podimatas, Angeliki Stouraiti, Konstantinos Louzis, Nikolaos P. Ventikos, Harilaos N. Psaraftis (NTUA) and Håvard Nordahl (SINTEF), the paper introduces a comprehensive set of economic, environmental, and social KPIs aimed at assessing the performance of a future-oriented, autonomous Short Sea Shipping SSS and Inland Waterway Transport IWT system in Europe.

The system, under development within the framework of the SEAMLESS project, envisions an integrated network of waterborne shuttle services powered by highly automated and autonomous technologies. These innovations are being validated through a combination of real-life demonstrations and simulations in different use cases across Europe.

The presentation focused on how these KPIs serve as a critical framework to evaluate the system’s overall efficiency, sustainability, and societal impact, supporting the project’s goal of delivering a smarter, greener logistics future for Europe.
